In 2024, a collaborative project brought ceramic artists together to explore the relationship between traditional ceramic practice and artificial intelligence. Using Midjourney as one tool within a broader creative process, the project examined how AI can influence artistic ideas, aesthetics, and production while encouraging critical discussion about its ethical implications. The initiative also aimed to foster community and support research into human–machine collaboration.
AI-generated ceramic concepts were developed from images of physical artwork and descriptions of an artistic practice. The selected designs were intended to be visually compelling, realistically manufacturable, technically and conceptually challenging, and narratively rich. Participating artists received only the generated images and used them as starting points for creating original ceramic works. They were encouraged to interpret the images rather than reproduce them directly. The prompts, source materials, and project data were withheld until the artists completed their pieces to reduce outside influence. Multiple artists sometimes selected the same image, creating further discussion about interpretation, originality, and authorship in art.
