This sounds like fun – and it’s free!
A countryside tradition will take centre stage at an event this autumn.
The Isle of Wight Steam Railway at Havenstreet will host the Autumn Isle of Wight Hedgelaying competition on November 8, with the first event taking place earlier this year.
Thomas Cowley, trustee of event organiser Wight Nature Fund, said: “The benefits of hedgelaying are numerous and it complements the Isle of Wight’s UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status.
“It is a fantastic day out, for both competitors and spectators who are interested in learning more about this vital rural craft.”
Entry is free for both competitors and spectators, with parking available on site.
Each participant will be tasked with laying and securing a 10m length of hedge within the allotted time.
Spectators are welcome from 10am, with food and drink available at Havenstreet Station.
The event will also feature demonstrations of traditional crafts and rural activities.
