Joan Tavares Avant brings us Tales from Granny Squannit in the Mashpee Enterprise.
Mrs. Frederick Gardner, Mashpee Wampanoag, shared the legend about the Screecham Sisters with author Elizabeth Reynard, who wrote it down around 1934.
No one could not settle on Screecham’s Island, which lies off Cotuit near Mashpee, because the ghost of Hannah Screecham frightened men away. She and her sister Sarah lived alone on the island for some time. One day, they squabbled like the devil, and Sarah moved to south Mashpee, where Princess Evening Star lived. She created herself a hut in the woods by the place known as Witches Pond. Both sisters were evil as hell’s bells. Sarah became a witch, Hannah befriended the pirates who sailed along South Cape Beach. All of them knew her and feared her.
