Mapping the Emergence of Cicada Broods

Cicada’s are trending on Google right now. I guess we’re all trying to find out when the 2024 brood will emerge. Cicada’s are interesting because of their strange 17-year hibernation cycle and the sheer mass of millions, if not billions, of the insects that emerge from the ground, sprout wings, make a ton of noise, have sex then die within a few weeks.

Aside from their absurdly long hibernation cycle Brian Resnick at Vox points out a few other oddities about cicadas:

There are many mysteries about cicadas — what’s with the prime numbers on their alarm clocks, and for that matter, how the hell do they keep time? What is known is that when the ground temperatures reach around 64 degrees Fahrenheit, they’ll emerge this spring, numbering in the billions. And if you live in the Eastern half of the United States, it’s likely another brood, and another and another, wait patiently underground, all to emerge for you in the years ahead.

If you’re wondering when and where the noisy critters will arrive, Brian’s provided a map of the broods emerging in 2024 and over the next decade.
