International Observe the Moon Night will be “observed” on Saturday. The event started about four years ago and is aimed at increasing “the sense of wonderment and curiosity” about “our nearest neighbor, the moon,” according to the event website,www.observethemoonnight.org.
International Observe the Moon Night is sponsored by scientific organizations including the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, which bills itself as the “largest general astronomy society in the world, with members in over 70 nations.”
The website lists a host of professional and amateur moon gazers who are prepared to look up Saturday, from the Seattle Astronomical Society to the South Florida Amateur Astronomical Association.
