Here’s some good news coming out of Detroit. Community groups and residents are getting together for this year’s ARISE Detroit! Neighborhoods Day. More than 180 community service projects are set to transform the area – from churning the earth in a community garden on the city’s southwest side to “adopting” several Detroit public schools for service projects. Participants say each is a catalyst for change.
‘Hope has not died,’ said Luther Keith, executive director of ARISE Detroit!, a coalition of more than 400 nonprofits, churches and community groups. ‘We know things are challenging, but this day is a statement … that this is a city that beats with a strong heart.’ The event has grown each year since its 2007 start, Keith said, and this summer has drawn sponsors such as Meijer, Comerica Bank, the Michigan State Housing Development Authority and the Detroit Media Partnership, which operates the business aspects of The Detroit News and Detroit Free Press.
