Hey! I love Will Durant. I read a few of his volumes from The Story of Civilization and found them very accessible.

I never got up the courage to read all the volumes. I read his “The Story of Philosophy,” as you can tell, and loved it. To supplement my desire for learning about history and civilization, I read Spengler’s “The Decline of the West,” Toynbee’s “A Study of History” (both volumes), Kenneth Clark’s “Civilisation,” and Jacob Bronowski’s “The Ascent of Man.” The last two I found especially good, since they were packed with imagery.

I read Our Oriental Heritage and Caesar and Christ. I’ll have to pick up The Story of Philosophy and will look into Kenneth Clark’s Civilisation. I find history and philosophy interesting, but so many of the books on the subject are so tedious, scholarly and dry it’s hard to get through them.

Oh, then don’t read Toynbee. He was as dry as a neat martini. Ack!

Thanks for the heads up. My hat off to you for having gotten through two volumes.
