Billie Holiday, 1938
The “Lady Sings the Blues” myth was strictly for people who don’t get the music and don’t care to, part of a pervasive worship of tragic artists who die young, for the sake of the bad habits, not the art. Billie Holiday’s force of personality comes through on the records regardless, and her uncanny pitch sense, and that unique capacity for becoming one of the horns in the band, which made the musicians love her so. –Elliott_Hurwitt — (from the comments section)
