Korea is known to be one of the countries leading the way in developing a more environmentally responsible economy. So it is no surprise that their Samsung smartphone manufacturing arm recently pulled down an award for the first time ever for a mobile handset. TCO Development is a firm which grades all kinds of companies on several environmentally friendly parameters. These range from how many hazardous materials are used in the manufacturer of a product to its eventual recycling potential. They named the Galaxy S4 as the first smartphone they have ever given a sustainability award to.
The strict grading also checks to see whether a company releases nickel, a potentially hazardous allergen, in the creation of its product. TCO praised Samsung for manufacturing their globally popular and best-selling S4 smartphone without using hazardous materials like mercury and beryllium. The award even takes into account the efficiency of the recharging mechanism included with the smartphone, as well as other factors which would lead to efficient sustainability throughout the life of a product.
